​Apostrophes are used to join two words together. We do this to shorten words. These are called contractions.



e.g. She is - She's
I am - I'm
do not - don't

​When joining a word with is and us, you just add 's onto the end of the word.

​She is - she's
he is - he's
let us- let's

​

​When joining a word with not, you leave out the o and add n't onto the end of the word.

​is not -isn't
have not - haven't
do not - don't

can not - can't
(can already ends in a n so you just add 't)

​When joining a word with are, you leave out the a and add 're onto the end of the word.

​they are -they're

​

​When joining a word with have, you leave out the ha and add 've onto the end of the word.

​should have - should've

​

​When joining a word with will, you leave out the wi and add 'll onto the end of the word.

​we will - we'll
he will - he'll
