The Spread of Islam, Military Force and treaties

The Spread of Islam: Conquests and Agreements

During the early spread of Islam in the 7th and 8th centuries, Muslim leaders expanded their territory through a combination of military campaigns and treaties (peaceful agreements). After the death of Prophet Muhammad in 632 CE, the Muslim armies, led by various caliphs (rulers), moved beyond the Arabian Peninsula. They conquered regions like Egypt, Syria, and Persia, but they also made peace treaties with many communities. These treaties often allowed non-Muslims to keep practicing their religions if they paid a special tax called the jizya. Through both methods, Islam spread across a vast area, creating one of the largest empires of that time, where people of different faiths lived together under Muslim rule.
