The Second Great Awakening

Spiritual Revival

The Second Great Awakening (SGA) was a era of spiritual revival. Revival is the reawakening of spiritual emotion or "spiritual feelings", or religious passion. The revivals were taught in tent meetings in large communities by passionate teachers.
The SGA happened right after the Industrial Revolution and Urbanization periods when Americans began moving to cities. The movement was focused on challenging traditional beliefs. The SGA was centered around Protestants who taught two main ideas:
1. Each person is responsible for their own salvation/beliefs.
2. A person can prove their faith by their
good deeds.
These tent meetings resulted in more people coming to churches, building strong religious communities and practicing their religion more outwardly.
The SGA directly led to many reform movements. People believed there needed to be strong change in American society.
