Cells have small structures inside that are called organelles.

Each organelle has a specific job that helps the cell survive.

Cells can be part of a larger system like circulatory system.

​We are going to focus on the Eukaryotic cells!

• made up of fats and proteins to create a flexible membrane

• controls what leaves and what enters cell

• gives shape to animal cells

• protects organelles inside

A - Plasma Membrane

• holds the DNA which is organized in chromosomes.

• DNA has instructions for growth, metabolism, and inherited traits.

• Enclosed by double membrane

​C- Nucleus

• Makes ribosomes that help the cell to build proteins

• think: a tiny factory inside the control center (nucleus)

• some nuclei have more than one nucleolus

​

​H -Nucleolus

• flat, pancake-like sacs that are stacked on top of each other

• help package proteins and fats from the endoplasmic reticulum

• modifies, packages and sorts the proteins and sends them to where they are needed in the cell or out

​G - Golgi Body or Golgi Apparatus

• small, bubble-like pouches that carry important things around the cell

• carry protein around cell

• carry messages between organelles

• carry waste to be removed from cell

• hold onto material cell might need later

​F -Vesicles

• they make protein

• can float freely around cell or attach to endoplasmic reticulum

• made of RNA

​

​B - Ribosomes

• a jelly-like liquid that fills in the cell and supports the organelles

• where food gets broken down for energy and messages are passed

​

​D - Cytoplasm

• covered in ribosomes that make it look bumpy, hence the term rough

• flat sacs fold and make sure the protein is built correctly then sends it off to work

​

​I - Rough Endoplasmic
Reticulum

• makes lipids, or fats, and breaks down harmful substances

• does not have ribosomes on it and can change its shape to help with different jobs

​

​ J- Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

• tiny power plants to create energy for the cells

• take energy from food and change it into energy the cell can use

  • called cellular respiration

​

E - Mitochondria

All of the organelles we just discussed are membrane
bound because they are Eukaryotic.
