Earth & Human Activity !

Understanding natural resources and intro to groundwater/freshwater sources.

2

Vocab! ⭐ PT.1

  1. Fossil fuels - A natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms

  2. renewable resources - A resource that can be replenished naturally over time

  3. non-renewable resources - A substance that is used up more quickly than it can replace itself

  4. groundwater - Water held underground in the solid or in pores and crevices in rock

  5. geological processes - All types of processes affecting geologic structures

3

Vocab! ⭐ PT.2

  1. distribution - The way in which something is shared out among a group or spread over an area

  2. Aquifer - A body of permeable rock which can contain or transmit groundwater

  3. permeable - A product (like the membrane) that allows liquids or gases to pass through it

  4. natural resources - Materials or substances such as minerals that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain

4

Multiple Select

Which THREE are vocab words?

1

Fossil fuels

2

Replaceable

3

Fault lines

4

Renewable

5

Permeable

5

"Non-Renewable" resources also generate energy but from sources that cannot be renewed in a human lifespan, it takes millions of years. These include coal, natural gas, oil, and nuclear energy which are all fossil fuels.

Non-Renewable

A "Renewable" resources that generates energy from sources that does not run out, or can be replenished in a lifespan. Examples of this are sunlight, wind, water, geothermal, and biomass.

6

Multiple Choice

A resources that is replaced quickly is...

1

Non-Renewable

2

A Natural Resource

3

Renewable

4

Energy

7

Multiple Select

Which TWO are a non-renewable resources

1

Oil

2

Biomass

3

Wind

4

Natural Gas

8

media

Earth's many natural resources are unevenly distributed on Earth's surface. This is because many geological processes occur over millions of years, which tend to be nonrenewable, However, renewable resources are also limited in their distribution.

Distribution

9

Multiple Choice

Earth's natural resources are _____ distributed because of _____ .

1

unevenly; geological processes

2

unevenly; hydrological processes

3

evenly; solar power

4

evenly; geological processes

10

Multiple Choice

ONLY non-renewable resources are unevenly distributed

1

True

2

False

The supply of fresh water is limited and unevenly distributed around the Earth. Only about 2.5% of Earth's water is fresh. The distribution depends on both past and present Earth processes, such as climate patterns and the shape of the land.

Distribution of Freshwater

12

Multiple Choice

What percent of Earth's water is fresh?

1

25%

2

3%

3

2.5%

4

98%

13

Multiple Choice

What does the distribution of Freshwater depend on?

1

Only present geological processes

2

Both past and present geological processes

3

Only past geological processes

4

Both past and present hydrological processes

14

Groundwater Intro

Groundwater is an important part of the hydrologic cycle, it is water found underground in the cracks in the soil, sand, and rock. It moves through geologic formations of soil, sand, and rocks called aquifers.

15

media

These aquifers can move water through materials because they have large connected spaces that makes them permeable. The order of layer that is best for aquifers is permeable rock, groundwater, and impermeable.

And More..

16

Fill in the Blank

Type answer...

17

Multiple Choice

The CORRECT order of the layers that are best for an aquifer are...

1

Impermeable rock, oil, and groundwater

2

Groundwater, impermeable rock, and permeable rock

3

Permeable rock, groundwater, and impermeable

4

Impermeable rock, permeable rock, and groundwater
