I can describe the relative size of units and choose the appropriate unit to measure a given object.
I can represent a larger unit with smaller units
MGSE4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec.
b. Express larger units in terms of smaller units within the same measurement system.
c. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table.
MGSE4.MD.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

Mia has 7 yards of ribbon to make hairbows. She needs 8 inches per hairbow. How many hairbows can she make from the ribbon she has?
1st - Determine the number of feet of ribbon.
7 yds x 3 = 21 ft
2nd - Determine how many inches of ribbon.
21 ft x 12 = 252 in
3rd - Determine how many hairbows she can make.
252 in ÷ 8 = 31 R4
Mia can make 31 hairbows.

Tim wants to make a rope swing. He needs 10 yds of rope to make the swing. He went to Lowes and the rope was sold in rolls of 360 in. How many rolls of rope will he need to buy to have enough rope for his swing?
1st - Determine how many feet of rope is in one roll.
360 in ÷ 12 = 30 ft
2nd - Determine how many yards of rope is in one roll.
30 ft ÷ 3 = 10 yds

Ben and Jack are having a snowboarding contest to see who can snowboard the furthest. Ben snowboards 50 yds before falling. Jack snowboards 610 feet before he falls. Who snowboarded the furthest?
You either determine how many feet Ben snowboarded or how many yards Jack snowboarded.
Number of feet Ben snowboarded:
50 yds x 3 = 150 ft
Number of yards Jack snowboarded:
610 ft ÷ 3 = 203 R1
203 R1 = 203 yds 1 ft
150 ft < 610 ft or 203 yds 1 ft > 50 yds
