Vocabulary words

For the next slides, we are going to look at SEVEN vocabulary words that are associated with our unit: Inequalities.

3

Equation

An equation is a mathematical sentence made of two expressions connected by an equals sign. Below, is an example of an equation. Both sides of the equation are equal to each other.

An equation usually has a variable
(like x) that we need to solve.
The variable can only equal
ONE NUMBER in an equation!

4

Expression

An expression contains one or more variables that are combined by an operation such as + or -. Expressions DO NOT include the = sign.

In the example, we have an
expression of 2x - 5.

5

Variable

A variable is often shown by a letter (such as x) to show a number that is unknown.

media

6

Term

A term is a number, variable, or a number with a variable. These terms are usually separated by a + or -.

The equation example has three equations. Can you find them?

media

7

Coefficient

A coefficient is the number that is before a variable. For example, the 2x below is a term. The x is the variable and the 2 is the coefficient.

media

8

Constant

A constant is a term that only has one number and no variable attached to it. For example, the 5 and 13 below are constants as well as terms.

9

Inequality

An inequality is a mathematical sentence made of two expressions connected by an inequality symbol. These symbols are the following:

An equation/inequality usually
has a variable (like x) that we need to solve.
The variable includes a range of
numbers it can be.
