QUESTIONS TO ANSWER

  1. WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF A FRACTION?

13

media

The parts of a fraction are the numerator and the denominator.

Numerator- the number above the line in a common fraction showing how many of the parts indicated by the denominator are taken, for example, 2 in 2/3.

Denominator- the number below the line in a common fraction; a divisor. example, 3 in 2/3.

Let's Practice:

Remember: A fraction is a division problem, in which the numerator(dividend) is divided by the denominator (divisor).

20

Fill in the Blank

A fraction is a division problem, in which the numerator (dividend) is divided by the denominator (divisor). What fraction would you form from the following division problem?

Four students shared one desert. How much desert did each student get?

21

Fill in the Blank

A fraction is a division problem, in which the numerator (dividend) is divided by the denominator (divisor). What fraction would you form from the following division problem?

11 tomato slices are being shared equally among 3 pizzas. How many slices are on each pizza?

22

Fill in the Blank

A fraction is a division problem, in which the numerator (dividend) is divided by the denominator (divisor). What fraction would you form from the following division problem?

Four students shared three deserts. How much desert did each student get?

23

Fill in the Blank

A fraction is a division problem, in which the numerator (dividend) is divided by the denominator (divisor). What fraction would you form from the following division problem?

If 4 people want to share 3 sacks of rice equally, how many sacks of rice should each person get?

Important Terms-

28

FRACTION

How many parts of a whole:

29

media

NUMERATOR

The top number in a fraction.

Shows how many parts we have.

30

media

DENOMINATOR

The bottom number in a fraction.

Shows how many equal parts the item is divided
into.

31

media

COMMON DENOMINATOR

When two or more fractions have the same denominator
(the bottom number).

When do fractions need a common denominator?

We can add and subtract fractions only when they have
a common denominator.

How do you find the common denominator?

When two or more fractions have the same denominator
(the bottom number).

We can add and subtract fractions only when they have
a common denominator.

To get common denominators we can multiply both top
and bottom of a fraction by the same amount .

32

media

EQUIVALENT FRACTION

Fractions which have the same value, even though they
may look different.

Task: Write a set of equivalent fractions.

Example 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent, because they are
both "half"
