Important Terms-

FRACTION

How many parts of a whole:

NUMERATOR

The top number in a fraction.

Shows how many parts we have.

DENOMINATOR

The bottom number in a fraction.

Shows how many equal parts the item is divided
into.

COMMON DENOMINATOR

When two or more fractions have the same denominator
(the bottom number).

When do fractions need a common denominator?

We can add and subtract fractions only when they have
a common denominator.

How do you find the common denominator?

When two or more fractions have the same denominator
(the bottom number).

To get common denominators we can multiply both top
and bottom of a fraction by the same amount .

EQUIVALENT FRACTION

Fractions which have the same value, even though they
may look different.

Task: Write a set of equivalent fractions.

Example 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent, because they are
both "half"
