Rational and Irrational Numbers Review
Algebra 1/ Intermediate Algebra
2
What is a Rational Number?
A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction where the denominator (bottom number) is not ZERO!
Repeating decimals
Terminating decimals
3
Types of RATIONAL NUMBERS
Natural Numbers
aka "counting numbers." These are the numbers that you can count (so, basically all positive whole numbers with the exception of 0).
Whole Numbers
Whole numbers are all natural numbers and 0!
Integers
Basically all positive and negative WHOLE numbers (and 0).
4
What is an irrational number?
An irrational number can not be written as a fraction.
ALL repeating decimals
Square roots of imperfect squares (aka- square roots that don't work out)

Operations with Rational and Irrational Numbers
When you're ADDING:
Rational+Rational = Rational
Rational + Irrational= Irrational
Irrational +Irrational= Irrational
When you're MULTIPLYING:
Rational x Rational= Rational
Rational x Irrational = Irrational
Irrational x Irrational= Irrational or Rational
16

Let's talk about EXPRESSIONS
An algebraic expression is a series of numbers, letters and operation signs without an = sign.
We call each part of an expression a term. Terms are separated by + and - signs inside of the expression. Terms can contain coefficients (big numbers), variables (letters), and exponents (little flying numbers).
27
More about Expressions
A constant is a number that does NOT have a variable.
The degree of an expression can be found by adding all of the UNLIKE variables' exponents.
