Identifying And Graphing Ordered Pairs
SE: 5.8B The student is expected to describe the process for graphing ordered pairs of numbers in a the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.
Lesson Objectives:
Identify the axes and origin on a coordinate plane.
Understand the concept of ordered pairs and how they represent a point's location.
Learn to plot points on the coordinate plane using ordered pairs.
3
Understanding the Coordinate Plane
A coordinate plane is like a map for math! It has two lines called axes.
• The horizontal line is called the x-axis
• The vertical line is called the y-axis
• The lines meet at a point called the origin (0,0) which is the starting point.
Ordered pair are (x,y). X-coordinate, then y-coordinate
We use this to locate points, just like a treasure map!
4
Understanding Ordered Pairs
An ordered pair (x, y) tells us the exact location on the coordinate plane. The first number, x, shows how far to move right from the origin. The second number, y, shows how far to move up. Let's explore how this works!
Always remember X always come before Y, think of the alphabet
5
Ordered Pair: Two numbers that tell us where a point is located (x,y)
X-axis: The horizontal line that goes left to right
Y-axis: The vertical line that goes up and down
Origin: The point where the x-axis and y-axis meet (0,0)
Coordinates: Numbers that show exact location of a point
Important Vocabulary

Match
Match the words to their definition
The point (0, 0) where the axes meet
The horizontal number line on the coordinate plane.
The vertical number line on the coordinate plane.
A pair of numbers (x, y) that describes the location of a point.
Going from left to right.

Which of the following word means:
"The point (0, 0) where the axes meet."
x-axis
origin
horizontal
8
Look at how Ms. Boateng plot the point (4, 5) on the graph and listen to how she's describing it.
First, we start at the origin.
We move 4 steps to the right along the x-axis, and then 5 steps up along the y-axis. There's our point!
Let's Try: Plotting a Point
9
Multiple Choice
Here's your chance to try:
Let's plot the point (2, 3) together. How many steps do we take to the right? And how many steps up?
Which description do you agree with?
Move 3 steps to the right on the x-axis. Then, move 2 steps up on the y-axis
Move 2 steps to the right on the x-axis. Then, move 3 steps up on the y-axis

Graphing
You Try: Plotting More Points
Plot these points on the coordinate plane:
(1, 1), (3, 4), and (5, 2). Use the marker to put a dot on the 3 points.
Put a Thumbs Up When You're Done!
11
Identifying Coordinates
Now that we know how to plot points, let's learn to read coordinates from the plane. Each point has a special address, called coordinates, which tells us where it is.
Think of it like finding a treasure on a map!
12
Open Ended
Look at this point marked with a smiley face on our coordinate plane. To find its coordinates, we move horizontally on the x-axis and vertically on the y-axis.
What is the ordered pair of the smiley face?
13
Multiple Choice
Problem Set:
On the coordinate plane shown, Katie began at the origin and moved to the point at (3,5). Which could describe Katie's path?
She moved 3 spaces along the y-axis and 5 spaces to parallel to the x-axis to Point K
She moved 3 spaces to the right on the x-axis and 3 spaces vertical to the y-axis to Point L
She moved 3 spaces to the right on the x-axis and 5 spaces vertical to the y-axis to Point M
She moved 3 spaces to the right on the x-axis and 5 spaces parallel to the x-axis to Point N

Exit Ticket
You're going to now apply what you have learned this week to your Exit Ticket "Assessment" that you have been given.
Make sure to write your name and date on paper along with TEKS 5.8B and turn it in when you're done to complete the work.
