2

Mean

  • The mean is the average of a data set.

  • To find the mean we add all the values of a data set together, the divide by the number of entries.

3

Mean Example 1

  • The following numbers represent the amount of hours Isaac has spent on homework over the last week. Find the average.

  • 3,8,4,6,5,4

4

Median

  • The Median is the middle value when the values are in NUMERICAL ORDER. (We can not find median if the numbers are not in numerical order.

5

Median Example 1

  • Find the median for the data 4,4,3,2,2,2,8,7,9

  • Make sure your list is in numerical order

  • 2,2,2,3,4,4,7,8,9

  • the median is 4

6

Median with even numbers

  • imagine our data set has an even amount of numbers

  • 4,4,5,8,9,10

  • there is no middle number, but that does not mean there is no median

  • the median of the data set is 6.5

7

MODE AND RANGE

  • the mode of a data set is the number that appears the most. If no number appears more than once, there is no mode.

  • The range is the biggest number minus the smallest number of your data set.

Multiple Choice

Becky worked part-time at a restaurant. The amount of money she earned for each of six weeks is shown.

$50,   $82,   $39,   $50,   $31,   $70

Becky earned $23 for working a seventh week. Which statement for these seven weeks is true?

1

The mean decreases and the median remains the same.

2

The median decreases and the mean remains the same.

3

The median and the mean both remain the same.

4

The mean and the median both decrease.

9

Multiple Choice

The number of runs scored by the Stars for six games is shown below.

4, 9, 2, 4, 1, 6

If the Stars scored 14 runs in their seventh game, which of the following statements is true?

1

The mean and the median both increase.

2

The mean increases and the median remains the same.

3

The median and the mean both remain the same.

4

The median increases and the mean remains the same.

10

Multiple Choice

In which data set below are the median and the mode the same number?

1

1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3

2

14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 20

3

8, 10, 12, 12, 13, 17

4

1, 3, 7, 9, 10

11

Multiple Choice

Which list of gasoline prices has the greatest range?

1

$1.89, $2.19, $2.35, $2.49, $3.05

2

$4.29, $3.89, $4.19, $3.65, $3.15

3

$2.09, $2.29, $3.25, $2.55, $2.89

4

$2.19, $3.51, $2.75, $3.25, $2.99

12

Multiple Choice

The temperatures, in degrees Fahrenheit, at noon for the past four days were 58, 56, 44, and 58. The mean, median, and mode were calculated for these four values. The next day, the temperature, at noon, was 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Which statement best describes the change to the mean, median, and mode of the data after 57 was added to the list?

1

The median and the mode changed, but not the mean.

2

The mean and the median changed, but not the mode.

3

The mean was the only measure that changed.

4

The median was the only measure that changed.

13

Multiple Choice

The median will increase, decrease or stay the same if you add 15 to the data set. If it changes, by how much?

13, 24, 18, 12, 29

1

Increase, 1.5

2

Stay the same

3

Decrease, 1.5

14

Multiple Choice

Nancy worked part-time at a restaurant. The amount of money she earned for each of six weeks is shown.

$45,   $81,   $38,   $45,   $31,   $69

Nancy earned $22 for working a seventh week. Which statement for these seven weeks is true?

1

The median and the mean both remain the same.

2

The median decreases and the mean remains the same.

3

The mean and the median both decrease.

4

The mean decreases and the median remains the same.

15

Multiple Choice

The number of runs scored by the Mustangs for six games is shown below.

5,  9,  0,  5,  0,  7

If the Mustangs scored 10 runs in their seventh game, which of the following statements is true?

1

The median and the mean both remain the same.

2

The mean and the median both increase.

3
