The main function of a narrative essay is to share a point of view. This can be persuasive or simply help you appreciate the value of a point made with the story.

What's their purpose?

The narrative writing definition is simply the act of telling a story using words. It's like painting a picture with words, creating characters, places, and events that come to life in the reader's mind. Whether it's a short story, a novel, or even a movie script, narrative writing takes the reader on a journey, engages their emotions, and often leaves them with something to think about.

What are they?

Non-Linear - storytelling technique that presents events out of chronological order, often using techniques such as flashbacks, flash-forwards, or multiple timelines.

Why would an author write a narrative work linear vs non-linear?

KEY FEAUTURES
that are essential for crafting a compelling personal narrative

  • Personal Experience – The story should be based on a real-life experience that holds significance for the writer. It should include emotions, thoughts, and reactions to make it relatable and engaging.

  • Chronological Order – Events should be organized in the order they happened to ensure clarity and logical flow. Transitions such as “first,” “then,” and “finally” help guide the reader through the sequence of events.

  • Sensory Details – Descriptions using the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch) make the narrative vivid and immersive. These details help the reader feel present in the experience.

  • Reflection – The writer should include personal insight, explaining what was learned or how the experience impacted them. This adds depth and meaning to the narrative.
