Grocery Stores 100 Years Ago
Believe it or not, grocery stores have changed drastically, or a great deal in the past 100 years. One hundred years ago, people would go to grocery stores with a list of what they needed. Once at the store, they would hand the list to the clerk who would fill a bag with all the needed items that were kept behind the counter. The clerk would then check them out as well. People did not get to select their own items.

This changed with the opening of the first self-serve grocery store. Piggly Wiggly opened in Chicago in 1916 and was the first grocery store that allowed people to select their own groceries. They could pick and choose which products they wanted and place them in their shopping basket. Shoppers could browse and look at all the items the store had to offer. This meant that they would often buy more things that were not on their lists.
