​What is Parallel Structure?

Parallel structure is the use of the same pattern of parts of a sentence to provide conciseness and clarity for the reader.

When using parallel structure, remember that similar parts of speech are listed together.

This means that nouns go with nouns, adjectives go with adjectives, verbs go with verbs.

Examples of parallel structure

Adjectives:
Layla was talented, committed, and hardworking.
The adjectives describe Layla.

Examples of parallel structure

Nouns:
The museum has a collection of paintings, sculptures, and photographs.

Examples of parallel structure

Verbs:
The chef likes to cook, bake, and grill.

The verbs are actions the chef likes to do.

Clauses:
The team won because they practiced hard, played smart, and never gave up.
