1.0.0–1.1.0 Introducing the NEC®

•

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) publishes NFPA 70®.
–

Also known as the National Electrical Code®(NEC®)

•

All electrical work must comply with the NEC® and all local ordinances.

•

NEC Section 90.2(A)states that the primary purpose of the NEC® is the
practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from
the use of electricity.

1.1.2–1.1.3 What the NEC® Correlating Committee and
Code-Making Panels Do

•

The Correlating Committee ensures there are no conflicts, that changes
are updated in all locations, and that NFPA regulations are followed.

•

The Code-Making Panels (CMPs) create and revise requirements, and the
Correlating Committee reviews the proposed changes.

•

NFPA publishes the NEC® and provides information and training.

1.2.0 NEC® Revision Process

The NEC® is updated every three years.

•

Anyone can submit a proposal.

•

Proposals follow a four-step standards
development process.

Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) test new products
and certify their safety.

Well-known NRTLs include:

National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is an association of
companies that manufacture electric power equipment.

Develops product standards to ensure equipment quality and safety

Two organizations play critical roles in worldwide electrical standards:

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
•

The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Articles: The main topics of the NEC®, beginning with NEC Article 90,
Introduction, and ending with NEC Article 840, Premises-Powered
Broadband Communications Systems.

Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE): A professional
organization that develops international standards for electronics,
telecommunications, information technology, and power-generation products
and services.

International Electrotechnical commission (IEC): An international
organization that develops consensus standards for all electrical and
electronic technologies.

National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA): The association
that maintains and improves the quality and reliability of electrical products.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA): The publisher of the NEC®.
NFPA develops codes and standards to minimize the possibility and effects
of fire.

Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs): Product safety
certification laboratories that are responsible for testing and certifying
electrical equipment.
