この Kono
その Sono
あの Ano

Kono, Sono, and Ano (Japanese Demonstratives)

💡 In Japanese, Kono (この), Sono (その), and Ano (あの) are demonstrative adjectives used to indicate “this,” “that,” or “that over there” when referring to nouns. They help specify the location or proximity of something.

Demonstrative

Meaning

Usage

Example

Kono

This (near the speaker)

Refers to something near the speaker

Kono boushi = this hat

Sono

That (near the listener)

Refets to something near the listener

Sono boushi = that hat

Ano

That over there (far from both)

Refers to something far from both

Ano boushi = that hat over there (far from us)

Important Notes:

When using この (kono), その (sono), or あの (ano), a noun must follow these demonstratives. They cannot stand alone without a noun

✨ Example:
この (kono) + ズボン (zubon) = このズボン (kono zubon) - "This pants"

その (sono) + シャツ (shatsu) = そのシャツ (sono shatsu) - "That shirt"

あの (ano) + みずぎ (mizugi) = あのみずぎ (ano mizugi) - "That swimwear"

Hakimasu

💡 In Japanese, there are multiple verbs for saying "to wear," depending on the type of clothing or accessory you are talking about. Unlike English, where we just say "to wear" for most things, Japanese uses specific verbs for different items of clothing or accessories. Here's an explanation of the common verbs:

Kimasu (着ます)

Meaning: "To wear" (on the upper body, such as shirts, jackets, dresses, etc.)

Example:

シャツをきます。 (Shatsu o kimasu.)
"I wear a shirt." 👕

ドレスをきます。 (Doresu o kimasu.)
"I wear a dress." 👗

Hakimasu (履きます)

Meaning: "To wear" (on the lower body, such as shoes, pants, socks, etc.) 👟👖🧦

Example:

くつをはききます。 (Kutsu o hakimasu.)
"I wear shoes." 👟

ズボンをはきます。 (Zubon o hakimasu.)
"I wear pants." 👖

Kaburimasu (かぶります)

Meaning: "To wear" (on the head, such as hats, caps, or helmets) 🧢

Example:

ぼうしをかぶります。 (Boushi o kaburimasu.)
"I wear a hat." 🧢

Verb

Te-form

Te-form + mimasu (To try to do ....)

Kaburimasu (G1)

Kabutte

Kono boushi o kabutte mimasu

Kimasu (G2)

Kite

Sono doresu o kite mimasu

Hakimasu (G1)

Haite

Ano zubon o haite mimasu
