3
Bench Work
“Bench Work is the
term used in the
operations in the
machine shop which
involves the use of hand
tools, lay outing, drilling,
grinding and final fitting
of parts.”
4
Learning Outcome
•Identify the different types of assembly tools;
•Perform proper use of assembly tools
•Maintain and repair tools
5
Hand Tools
Hand tools are tools that are powered
manually. Hand tools include anything from
axes to wrenches.
6
How Familiar are you with Hand tools?
7
Hand Tools
• Assembly Tools
• Power Tools
• Layout Tools
• Cutting Tools
8
Assembly Tools
Assembly tools are use to put mechanical parts together.
9
Major types of Assembly Tools
• Screw drivers
• Wrenches
• Pliers
• Hammers
• Pullers
10
11
Screw drivers
Screw driver are use
to tighten or loosen
screws that are fixed
in the machine
element.
12
13
Types of Screw drivers
Philips (cross recess) screw drivers
Usually called as Positive,
it has a cruciform or cross-
shaped tips that are
unlikely to slip from the
cruciform slots of head
screws.
The end is tapered to an angle of 53
14
Types of Screw drivers
Standard screw drivers
The standard
screwdriver is used for
most ordinary work and
comes in variety of
sizes.
15
Types of Screw drivers
Ratchet screw drivers
These screwdrivers are made with a
three-position ratchet control for
screwing, unscrewing and also
providing a neutral position and are
used for turning screws in confined
spaces.
It can be operated without changing
the handgrip and are used for
slackening or tightening with a
medium force.
16
Types of Screw drivers
Stubby/ Stumpy Screw Driver
These are small sturdy
screwdrivers. This are
used when other types
of screwdrivers cannot
be used due to space
limitations.
17
Types of Screw drivers
Offset Screw Driver
Offset screwdrivers are used on
screws, which cannot be reached
from above. They are made with
short blades and with tips at right
angle.
Greater turning force can be applied
on screws by these screwdrivers
because of their leverage.
18

19
Types of Screw drivers
An impact driver is a tool that
delivers a strong, sudden
rotational and downward
force.
They are often used by
mechanics to loosen larger
screws (bolts) and nuts that
are corrosively "frozen" or
over-torqued.
Impact screw drivers
20
Types of Screw drivers
Precision Screw Driver
This are sets of smaller
screw driver for small
screws.
21
Screwdriver Technique
• The most important technique is to use the right size
screwdriver.
• Make sure the screwdriver head fits snugly.
• Push the screwdriver toward the head of the screw, turn
clockwise to tighten (the way a clock’s hands turn), counter-
clockwise to loosen.
22
23
Wrench
Wrenches are tools for
exerting a twisting stain, as
in turning nut and bolts.
The wrenches are designed
to grip opposite sides of nuts
and bolts when removing or
replacing parts.
24
Types of Wrench
Open Wrench/ Open End wrench
These may be single-ended
or double ended. The
opening designate the size
of wrench in inches or metric
and are often combined, as
5/16 by 3/8 (in English) and
16 mm by 18 in (Metric).
25
Types of Wrench
Adjustable Wrench
Most common types of
adjustable wrench are similar to
open end spanners, but they
have one movable jaw. The
opening between the jaws of a
typical 250-mm adjustable
wrench can be adjusted from
zero to 28.5 mm.
26
Types of Wrench
Box Wrench
Also called 12-point
wrench. It completely
surrounds the nut. It is
use when only a small
rotation of nut is allowed
because of space.
27
Types of Wrench
Combination Wrench
Combination of Open end
and Box end wrench
28
Types of Wrench
Socket Wrench
These are similar to the
box wrench but are driven
differently by means of a
handle provided with a
square head, which fits on
the top end of the socket
wrench.
29
Types of Wrench
Socket Wrench Handles
30
Types of Wrench
Torque Wrench
A torque wrench measures
resistance to turning--called
torque.
Use when there is a uniform
torque required.
Has a signaling device which
can be preset for the desired
torque.
31
Types of Wrench
Pipe Wrench/ Monkey Wrench
These are used for
gripping and turning
pipes of a wide range
of diameters.
32
Types of Wrench
Allen Wrench/ Allen Keys
These are hexagonal section bar tool
steel bent to ‘L’ shape. They are
sometimes called Allen keys.
These are used to rotate setscrews
having internal hexagon sockets. They
are available in sets ranging in size
from 1.5 mm to 20 mm across the flats.
33
Types of Wrench
Spanner
Spanners are used for
operating thread fasteners,
bolts and nuts. They are
made with jaws opening
that fit square on
hexagonal nuts and bolts
and screw heads.
34

Pliers
Pliers have a pair of
legs joined by a pivot,
hinged or fulcrum pin.
Each leg consist of a
long handle and a short
jaw.
60
Types of Pliers
Flat Nose Pliers
It has tapered wedge jaws
with flat gripping surfaces,
which may be either smooth
or serrated.
it is used for bending and
folding narrow strips of thin
sheet metal.
61
Types of Pliers
Long Nose Pliers
Thistype of pliers is
made with tapered
round shaped jaws.
They are used to
shaped loops in wires
and to form curves in
light metal strips.
62
Types of Pliers
Side Cutting Pliers
It is made with jaws set at
an angle. They are used
for shearing off wires in
confined spaces and
cutting off wires close to
the surface level.
63
Types of Pliers
End Cutting Pliers
This plier has the
same uses as the
side cutting pliers.
64
Types of Pliers
Slip Joint Pliers
These pliers are available in
various ranges of position
with different shapes of pivot
pins so that they have various
ranges of jaw openings.
They are mainly used for
gripping.
65
Types of Pliers
Cir Clip Pliers
This plier has the same
uses as the side cutting
pliers.
66
Types of Pliers: Cir Clip Pliers
Internal Cir clip Pliers
67
Types of Pliers: Cir Clip Pliers
External Cir clip Pliers
68
Types of Pliers
Locking Grip/ Vise Grip Pliers
Also called as Vise grip,
it is designed to hold
work.
One jaw is adjustable to
fit different sizes of
nuts, bolt, pipes and
rods

Hammers
A hammer is a tool meant
to deliver an impact to an
object.
The most common uses
are for driving nails, fitting
parts, forging metal and
breaking up objects.

95
Pullers
Puller
Fitted parts like bearings and
gears can be damage during
removal and installation if we use
Hammer, bars and chains.
For this purpose, we use pullers.
96
Types of Pullers
External Puller
Grips the back of the object with
their jaws while the forcing screw
pushes against the stationary part
97
Types of Pullers
Internal Puller
Have legs mount on the stationary part
while the forcing screw pulls the object.
98
Types of Pullers
Press Puller
Has legs mounted on
the stationary part,
while the object is
pushed and pressed.
99
Arbor Press
Arbor Press
An arbor press is a small hand
operated press. It is usually
used to do smaller jobs, such
as staking, riveting, installing
and removing bearings and
other press fit work.
100
Safety in Using Hand Tools
• Use the right tool for the right job
• Keep tools clean and store it properly
• Inspect tools before using
• Do not use a hammer to strike another
• Never hold the work in your hand when
using a screw driver
101
Safety in Using Hand Tools
• Never use an ordinary wrench to free
a frozen nut.
• Do not use an adjustable wrench in
any situation requiring a lot of force.
