Should OpenAI Change Its Name Due to Mission Expansion?

Criticism of Secrecy: Elon Musk has criticized OpenAI for becoming less transparent and more closed in its operations. He suggested that the organization should change its name to "ClosedAI" to reflect this shift.

Defence of Strategy: Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has defended the organization's shift to a for-profit model, stating that it was necessary to secure funding for large-scale AI research and development.

What do you think?

They should change their name.

They should stick to their current branding as it is well known.

I don't care either way.

I have another suggestion or comment/question.

Poll

The Bellini College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Computing at the University of South Florida (USF) is actively exploring the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its educational practices. While specific implementations within the college are not detailed, USF has initiated university-wide efforts to incorporate AI in teaching and assessment.

Is this a good approach to education, or a step too far?

This is the future and I'm here for it!

I like it, but I have some reservations.

(Explain via your mic/camera when asked)

I think this is a bad idea and we need to get back to traditional teaching methods.

Poll

Do you feel comfortable/confident putting your trust in AI to diagnose medical conditions for you, or for a loved one?

Yes, completely. I trust the technology and those using it.

No, I want human experts to complete all aspect of care.

I'm not sure yet, I want to learn more about this topic.

16

Let us know and we can discuss it.

Have you heard/read/seen anything interesting about AI news or developments this week?

17

Task - Presentation Creation with AI

  1. Prompt the LLM to output slide content based the topic on the following slide.

  2. Copy and paste that content into the presentation on Canva/PowerPoint/Google Slides

What you will do

  1. Access to an LLM such as: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or other

  2. A Canva Account or PowerPoint or Google Slides

What you will need

18

media

19

Generation issues:
The content might not be any good. It may be fictional or inaccurate. You need to check the validity of the information that is generated.

Technical issues:
You might not have a Canva account and may need to sign up.
If you don't have Canva Pro subscription, then you can't take advantage of the presentation auto-generation feature - I will demonstrate this to you to show you what you can do if you have access to a pro account.

Design issues:
You might want to use Canva as it has a large cache of graphics that can make your presentation stand out and be more colourful. However, BEWARE the use of premium (crowned) features as anything with a crown on it or a pro symbol will mean that when it comes to downloading your work Canva will try to bill you for each premium asset you used in your work - If you want to avoid this risk, use Google Slides or PowerPoint.

Do the potential benefits of AI outweigh the negatives?

Is AI development, adoption and use worth the risks?

Choose one of the options below:

Yes, totally worth it. The benefits will be great.

I'm less convinced, but I still see the potential for some good.

I'm not convinced, I think although some people will benefit the majority will suffer and the negatives outweigh the benefits.

AI will destroy us all!

Bow down to our technocratic overlords! Resistance is futile!
