Why do we sometimes say "al"?

​It's a mashup of the words a (to) and el (the).

When you have the words a and el back-to-back in a sentence, you just squish them together to make a new word - al!

Say "yo voy a el banco" out loud . . . do you hear how you kind of naturally squish them together? we just do the same thing with spelling.

La doesn't combine with a.

​You will say "a la", but never "a el".

You can only create "al" with the words a and el. When you say "a la", those 2 words stay separate.
