1 + 1 + 1 = 3 x 1

2 + 2 + 2 = 3 x 2

3 + 3 + 3 = 3 x 3

t x t x t = 3 x t

Here are some examples of expressions using variables

  • 3 x a is written as 3a, and a x b is written as ab.

  • x ÷ 5 is written as x/5.

  • 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 is the same as 4 grous of 3 or 4 times 3. So, y + y + y + y is the same as 4 groups of y, or 4y.

  • 2 x m = 2m, y x 6 = 6y, 2a ÷ 3 = 2a/3, 5 x a x b = 5ab

  • When a numeral is multiplied by a variable, the numeral should be written first.

5

Remember

m2 = m x m, in the same way as, 72 = 7 x 7.

m2 is read as "m squared" and 72 is read as "seven squared"
