7

What is mass?

The amount of matter in an object.

We measure mass in kilograms

8

What is density?

Density is a measure of how much mass an object has per volume.

In this image, the cube on the right is MORE dense than the cube on the left.

The bowling ball and the soccer ball are the same size (they have the same volume),

BUT they do NOT have the same density. The bowling ball is denser. It has more matter. That also means it is heavier (has more weight). More weight means it takes more force to move it. Think about trying to kick both of those balls. Why would one go flying and the other break your foot. Because of density.

By squeezing this bread and making it smaller, it becomes denser.

10

Why do some things float and some things sink?

  • Things float and sink depending on their DENSITY

  • Things that SINK are MORE DENSE than water

  • Things that FLOAT are LESS DENSE than water

What is volume?

The volume of an object means how much space it takes up in 3D. You can use a measuring cylinder to find the volume of a liquid, or you can times together the height, width and length of an object to find the volume. The units for volume are cm3.
