2
Multiple Choice
Which form of energy heats the Earth?
Mechanical
Radiant
Electrical
Chemical
3
Open Ended
In your own words, describe the Coriolis Effect. Your response must contain the words: rotation, curve, and wind.
4
Poll
Radiant/ solar energy spreads across ____, thus impacting climates all ove
latitudes (horizontally)
longitudes (vertically)
the Equator (centrally)
5
Multiple Choice
Uneven heating impacts:
Ocean Currents
Global Climates & Local Weather
The Hydrologic Cycle
Wind & Air Masses
All of the above
6
Factors that Effect Global Climates
Climate is the average weather conditions in a region over a certain period of time. Factors --> LOWERN
L- Latitudes
O- Ocean currents
W- Wind & air masses
E- Elevation
R- Relief
N- Nearness to water
7
Latitudes:
As a result of the sun's rays sspreading across the latitudes:
The area closest to the _____ has ___ temps and moist air.
The area closest to the _____ have ___ temps and dryer
8
Ocean Currents- Global Heat Distribution
OCs determine the climate in a region (i.e. cold currents keep coastal air temps cold, creating colder climate conditions and vice versa). **Difference surfaces absorb
The California Current is the cold West Coast current; the Gulf Stream Current is the warm East Coast current.
The Coriolis Effect explains the direction OCs rotate in.
Density is determined by salinity and & temperature of the current --> heat rises, cold sinks.
9
Ocean Currents- Global Heat Distribution
Surface currents are controlled by wind
Deep currents are controlled by nearness to/ away from Equator (the latitudes)
An OC's density is determined by salinity & temperature --> warmer, less saltier water will rise while the colder, saltier water sinks.
Different surfaces (i.e. soil, sea ice, ocean, sun) absorb sunlight differently (more/ less sun will be absorbed).
10
Open Ended
How do ocean currents impact a region's climate?
11
Multiple Choice
How will a cold ocean current impact a region's climate?
It would make an area that would normally have a warm climate cooler.
It would have no impact on the region.
12
Multiple Choice
How will a cold ocean current impact a region's climate?
It would make an area that would normally have a warm climate cooler.
It would have no impact on the region.
13
Fill in the Blank
Type answer...
14
Multiple Choice
What determines how/ if surface currents will mix with deep currents?
Differences in the density of the currents
Differences in the volume of the currents
Differences in the rotation of the currents
They will not mix
They will always mix
15
Wind & Air Masses
As convection currents cycle through warm and cool air, this produces wind/ air, thus air pressure.
Wind/ air moves from areas of higher pressure to areas of lower pressure, distributing heat and moisture around the world.
A jet stream separates colder northern air from warmer southern air, which impacts migration patterns of birds.

Multiple Choice
In a high-pressure system, describe the weather conditions expected:
Temp- Cool
Wind- Calm
Humidity- Decreases
Clouds- Clear

Clouds- Cloudy
17
Multiple Choice
In a low-pressure system, describe the weather conditions expected:
Temp- Cool
Wind- Calm
Humidity- Decreases
Clouds- Clear
Temp- Warm
Wind- Strong
Humidity- Humid
Clouds- Cloudy
18
Open Ended
How do you think the jet stream impacts the migration pattern of birds? (Sentence starter: Weather _____ of the jet stream means ______ temperatures, meaning birds will migrate to areas __________ the jet stream.)
19
