What is the purpose of MLA?

  • provides guidelines for the creation of a bibliography

  • this is known as a "Works Cited" page

Why is it important that I cite my sources?

  • As a writer, it is your responsibility to give proper credit to your sources

  • If you have not given proper credit to your sources, you have committed PLAGIARISM.

  • Plagiariam can result in serious consequences such as suspension, expulsion, fine, or even jail time

What is Plagiarism?

  • You have used someone else’s ideas without telling your reader where you took it from. 

  • Any idea or fact that you received from a source needs to be cited.

  • Any idea or fact that is common knowledge does not need to be cited. For example, a facts like the earth rotates around the sun are common knowledge and would not have to be cited.

Name & Title

  • The “Works Cited” page is always going to be the last page of your essay or report.

  • You should type the words “Works Cited” as your title and centre it on the page.

  • put your last name as a header in the top right corner of the page

Formatting

  • once you have copied and pasted all of your citations onto your Works Cited Page, you need to put them in ALPHABETICAL ORDER

  • ensure that your font is size 12

  • double-space

  • the second and subsequent lines of a citation are always indented five spaces (hanging indent)
