Direct Quotes, Narrative Quotes, and Paraphrasing

2
Direct Quotes
Direct quotes are copying word-for-word someone else's words, text, or ideas.
Must have:
--> quotation marks around all
--> credit to who wrote it (author, page number or title)
--> " " ( ).
3
Multiple Select
Select the correct direct quote:
“There is some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.” Tolkien
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” (Saint-Exupéry)
“We accept the love we think we deserve” (Chbosky).
“Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful” (Mary Shelley).
4
Multiple Select
Select the correct direct quote:
“Octopuses can squish their bodies down to no bigger than a crumpled-up bag of chips” (Braden) 38.
“I pick up the pace, and Hector giggles as if a horseback ride from a horse that’s hyperventilating is the best kind ever” (Braden 48)
“The only victory of the day is that somehow the power has come back on at home” (Braden 55).
‘Alone in the kitchen, I fix myself a frozen waffle and eat it looking out the window” (Braden 75).
5
Multiple Select
Select the correct direct quote:
“Moonlight is what started everything, what led me to the edge one May night” (3).
“Clara Lunatic is what some boys at school call me.” (What the Moon Saw).
“I wish they knew what my name means in Spanish: Clear Moon” (What the Moon Saw)
“I opened my new sketchbook and breathed in the fresh smell of paper and drew the house I saw in my head” (What the Moon Saw).

Use "narrative" quotes like a pro.
Next level quotes use narration lead into "snippets" and can even move the author's name outside of the parenthesis--if done correctly.
Still must have:
--> quotation marks around not-your-words
--> credit to who wrote it (author, page number or title)
--> " ." or " " more words.
7
Multiple Select
Select the correct narrative quote:
Braden explains that, “Octopuses can squish their bodies down to no bigger than a crumpled-up bag of chips” (38).
On page 38, Braden informs the reader, “Octopuses can squish their bodies down to no bigger than a crumpled-up bag of chips.”

Open Ended
Rewrite this quote so that you DON'T have to use parenthesis at the end:
“I punched him in the mouth" (Palacio 154).
9
Paraphrasing
Sometimes there is not one good sentence, but you still want to use another person's idea.
Paraphrasing changes 70% of someone else's words into your own.
Still must have:
--> credit to who wrote it (author, page number or title).
“Early people did something similar. These humans lived thousands of years ago. They also made pictures of their pups. Scientists think the carvings may be 9,000 years old” (“Canine Carvings”).
Scientists think early humans carved pictures of their dogs on cave walls about 9,000 years ago (“Canine Carvings”).
10
Open Ended
Paraphrase this quote:
“We found that violent video games do not appear to be linked to aggression. Games are now more important than ever for socialization, feeling autonomy and control during an uncertain time, and just de-stressing” (Ferguson).
