Phases of the Moon (1)
From Earth, we can observe the Moon’s appearance
changing from day to day. We call these changes
phases.
The Moon’s phases repeat in a cycle about every 29
days.
Because they follow a pattern, we can predict when
each of the phases will occur.
3
Multiple Choice
About how long does one cycle of the Moon’s phases take?
a day
a week
a month
a year
4
Phases of the Moon (2)
The phases are caused by the Moon’s orbit around
Earth. Depending on where the Moon is in its orbit, a
different portion of the Moon that is lit up by the Sun is
visible on Earth.
During a new moon phase, no portion of the Moon
facing Earth is lit up by the Sun. During a full moon, the
entire portion of the Moon lit up by the Sun is facing
Earth.
5
Multiple Choice
The phases of the Moon are caused by which of the following?
Earth’s rotation around its axis.
Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
the Moon’s orbit around Earth.
Earth’s shadow falling on the Moon.
6
Multiple Choice
What percentage of the Moon is lit by the Sun (as viewed from space)?
50%
100%
0-50%
0-100%

Eclipses
An eclipse occurs when
one space object
blocks sunlight from
reaching another space
object. On Earth, we can
observe two types of
eclipses: solar and
lunar.
12
Multiple Choice
Which position in the diagram show the Moon in a location where an eclipse could occur?
1

13
Solar Eclipse
A solar eclipse occurs
when the Moon
passes between Earth
and the Sun such that
parts of Earth
experience darkness
during daytime.
14
Multiple Choice
What is the phase of the Moon during a Solar Eclipse?
New Moon
First Quarter
Full Moon
Waning Gibbous

16
Lunar Eclipse
A lunar eclipse occurs
when the Moon passes
into Earth’s shadow. A
lunar eclipse can only
occur during a full
moon.
17
Multiple Choice
What is he phase of the Moon during a Lunar Eclipse?
New Moon
First Quarter
Full Moon
Waning Gibbous
18
Multiple Choice
Which position in the diagram show the Moon in a location where a LUNAR eclipse could occur?
1
3
5

19
Why are eclipses rare?
Eclipses occur a few times
each year, but they do not
happen during every orbit
of the Moon.That’s because
the Moon’s orbital plane is
not aligned with Earth’s
orbital plane around the
Sun.
20
Multiple Choice
Does the earth move around the sun or does the sun move around the earth?
The Earth moves around the Sun
The Sun moves around the Earth
Both
They don't move
21
Multiple Choice
Where is the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere?
They are on the same side
South is at the top and the North on the bottom
North is at the top and South at the bottom
22
Multiple Choice
United States is located at the Northern Hemisphere
True
False
23
Multiple Choice
What makes a year?
The Earth's tilt
The amount of time it takes the Earth to orbit around the Sun
The amount of time it takes the Sun to orbit around the Earth
The amount of time it takes the Earth to spin on its axis
24
Earth’s Orbit and Seasons (1)
Every year, Earth completes
one orbit around the Sun.
During this time, the people on
Earth experience changes in
the amount of daylight hours,
how direct the sunlight is, and
the seasons. All three of these
phenomena occur because
Earth’s axis is tilted.
25
Multiple Choice
Which of the following patterns is an effect of the Earth’s rotation?
The changing of the seasons.
The changing phases of the Moon.
Each planet in the Solar System orbits the Sun.
The Sun rises and sets once every day.
26
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is a year on Earth? The time it takes for __________
the Earth to complete an orbit around the Sun.
Earth to completely rotate around its axis.
the Moon to complete an orbit around the Earth.
the Sun to completely rotate around its axis
27
Earth’s Orbit and Seasons (2)
Earth’s tilt causes different parts of
Earth to receive different amounts
of sunlight depending on where
Earth is in its orbit. For example, in
June and July, Earth’s Northern
Hemisphere is tilted toward the
Sun, which means that daylight
lasts longer and sunlight is more
direct because of the Sun’s angle.
28
Multiple Choice
What is the angle of the Earth's tilt?
10 degrees
23.5 degrees
56.1 degrees
8.90 degrees
29
Multiple Choice
Which of the following results from the tilt of Earth? Earth’s tilt causes __________ .
the phases of the Moon.
more daylight in summer than in winter.
the year to take 365 days.
a day to take 24 hours.
30
Multiple Choice
Which of the following stays the same over the course of a year?
The amount of time the Sun is above the horizon each day.
The angle of the Sun at noon.
The angle of Earth’s tilt.
The distance between the Earth and the Sun.
31
Earth’s Orbit and Seasons (2)
This is why the Northern
Hemisphere experiences summer
during June and July. The Southern
Hemisphere is on the other side of
the equator (and thus tilted in the
opposite direction). The seasons
there are opposite the Northern
Hemisphere’s, making June and
July winter.
32
Multiple Choice
Changing seasons are caused by which of the following?
the tilt of Earth’s axis
changes in the Sun’s energy
the Earth’s not perfectly circular orbit around the Sun.
the distance from Earth to the Sun
33
Multiple Choice
Which position in the diagram represents the position of Earth during WINTER in the Northern Hemisphere?
Position A
Position B
Position C
Position D
34
Multiple Choice
Which position in the diagram represents the position of Earth during SUMMER in the Northern Hemisphere?
Position A
Position B
Position C
Position D
35
Multiple Choice
Which position in the diagram represents the position of Earth during FALL in the Northern Hemisphere?
Position A
Position B
Position C
Position D
36
Solar System
Our Solar System consists
of the Sun, eight planets,
their moons, asteroids,
comets, and dwarf planets.
The planets closest to the
Sun are smaller and made
of rock, whereas the planets
farther away are larger and
gaseous.
37
Multiple Choice
Which of the following lists contains all of the rocky planets in our Solar System?
Neptune, Mars,Venus, and Mercury.
Earth,Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter.
Mars, Mercury, Earth, and Saturn.
Mercury, Mars, Earth, and Venus.
38
Multiple Choice
Which of the following lists contains only gaseous planets in our Solar System?
Neptune, Mars, Venus, and Mercury.
Earth,Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter.
Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus
Mercury, Mars, Pluto, and Venus.
39
Distances in the Solar System
Objects in our Solar System
are so far away that it’s
sometimes hard to imagine
the distances. For example,
the distance from Earth to
Venus is the same as
traveling around Earth 950
times!
40
Multiple Choice
If an object is 3 AU from the Sun, it is:
3 times larger than the size of Earth
3 times closer to the Sun than Earth is
3 times farther away from the Sun than Earth is
Farther from the Sun than Earth but closer than Mars
41
Planets Sizes
There are also large differences
in the sizes of different space
objects in our Solar System. For
example, comparing the
smallest planet, Mercury, to the
largest planet, Jupiter, you
could fit 23,000 Mercuries in
the amount of space that
Jupiter takes up.
42
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is has a larger diameter than Earth?
the smallest gaseous planet in our Solar System
Venus
an asteroid
the Moon
43
Multiple Choice
Jupiter’s diameter is about 11 times larger than Earth’s diameter. If Earth were modeled with a pea (0.5 cm) which of the following would work best to create a scale model of Jupiter?
a plum (4.5 cm)
a racquetball (5.7 cm)
a basketball (23.9 cm)
a beach ball (50.8 cm)
44
Multiple Choice
Is the Earth bigger than the Sun or is the Sun bigger than Earth?
The Earth is bigger than the Earth
They are about the same size
The Sun is much bigger than the Earth
