Originally, in most ancient languages, words were written in either all upper-case letters or all lower-case letters to make the words easier to read. As the quality of paper improved, more differentiation was possible. In some languages between “ancient” and today, the most important words in a sentence might be capitalized while the lesser words would not.
6
Did you know where the terms upper- and lower-case came from?
When a typesetter was at his table preparing the letters for his printing press, the capital letters were kept in the “upper case” of his letter cabinet, while the smaller letters were kept in the “lower case.” See right for pictures!
