What is magnetism?
3
In the words of Mrs. Frizzle- Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!
Have these materials ready!
4
Video Response
Can you get your magnets to levitate?
Hop into a breakout room to brainstorm ideas and work together. We will start with 2 minutes let me know if you need more time.
What does participation look like: Unmute when you go into the room. Share ideas. Feel free to put your camera on as you experiment. Don't forget to talk it out! What did you use, what did you not need?

5
Share with the group in chat, or on mic- were you successful?
Why were you successful? What happened to make you unsuccessful?
What did you learn?

Let's see about attraction. Grab these materials:
bar magnets
ring magnets
Hold the bar magnets one in each hand. Face the two Red sides together and try to make them touch. Now try the blue. Finally, try two different colors. Do this with the ring magnets as well.
Write down your results!
7
Atoms make up everything.
Atoms are made of subatomic particles that are responsible for magnetism.

How do magnets work?
8
Hotspot
Magnets have 2 poles that always exist in a pair.
The North pole is positive and the South pole is negative.
Looking at the picture which do you think is the North Pole?

Let's see about attraction. Grab these materials:
bar magnet
ring magnet
colored chip
Now hold the bar magnet. Move the colored chip around the magnet. Where is the chip attracted to? Where is it repelled from?
10
Protons (+) Positive particle in the nucleus
Neutrons (0) Neutral particle in the nucleus
Electron (-)Negatively charged in the electron cloud.
Magnets have electrons that spin in the same direction
Subatomic particles

Poll
Materials:
bar magnet
2 metal washers
Place both metal washers with their edges attracted to the same pole of a bar magnet.
Use your fingers to squeeze the washers toward one another.
What happens?
The washers pull together
attracted
The washers push apart
repelled
The washers spun around
Something else- will put in the chat
