What happen to water that does not flow on the surface but is found in a watershed?
3
GROUNDWATER
4
Water Underground
- When water seeps or infiltrates the surface of the soil it will eventually flows to the ocean or a Lake.
- Before it reaches the Ocean or Lake some is used by humans .
- To understand how human use the water under underground we need to understand how the structure of the Earth holds and allows water to move
5
Objectives
- Discuss how water moves through the ground once it returns to Earth
- Identify the different features formed as water settles and move underground
- Explain how humans make use of the fresh water that is found underground
6
Water Underground
When water soaks down into the ground by gravity it passes through the PERMEABLE LAYER it eventually reaches the IMPERMEABLE LAYER
Permeable Layer : This is the area of the Earth where water is allowed to pass through . Soil is loose or porous
The impermeable layer is made up of solid rock . Water will not pass through but settles
7
8
Multiple Choice
Area of soil through which water moves through freely

10
Water Underground
The SATURATED ZONE is that area underground which holds water
The WATER TABLE is the highest level at which water is found underground. It is the top of the saturated zone
The UNSATURATED ZONE is that area above the water table through which water passes through.
11
Match

Allows water to pass through
Do not allow water to pass through
Area where water is not found
Area where water is found

Water underground
The water collected in the spaces underground is called an AQUIFER
A WELL is formed when a channel is dug into the aquifer
Sometimes an aquifer is very close to the surface of the Earth and will flow out . This is called a SPRING

Where below the Earth surface must one dig in order to make a well?
19
Open Ended
What are some things that would make a well run dry ?
20
When a well runs dry it can be RECHARGED when it rains . This will cause the water Table to rise
21

29
When water is trapped between two impermeable layer pressure may build up .
If the pressure gets too high it will puncture the rock forcefully releasing the water . This is called an ARTESIAN WELL

Labelling
Label the following parts of the features formed underground as water infiltrates the soil . Place label on letter
Water Table
Aquifer
impermeable layer
Permeable layer
Impermeable Layer
Dry Well
Well
Artesian Well
33
Geyser
Groundwater seeps underground is trapped in chambers and also moved in channels deep down
Heat from magma heats the water
Pressure builds up and the water is forcefully released
This water is very hot
How do you believe a hot spring is formed ?
