Subordinating Conjunctions

  • Definition: join an independent clause and a dependent clause

  • Typically introduce adverb clauses (answering how, why, to what extent, under what condition)

  • They create complex or compound-complex sentences.

Punctuating with Subordinating Conjunctions

  • If the subordinating conjunction comes in the MIDDLE of the sentence, there is NO COMMA!

    • the "No because comma" rule

    • exception - with appositives

  • Example: I wonder about the time when the great fortress was created.

Punctuating with Subordinating Conjunctions

  • If the subordinating conjunction comes at the start of the sentence, the comma goes at the end of the dependent clause!

  • Example: When we studied ancient Greece, we learned about the Acropolis.

  • When we look at the structures of ancient Greece, we see beautiful white marble.
