​The 3 G's

​The Spanish Conquistadors were violent men, often cruel, who used force to gain control over territory in the New World. Behind them came many people from Spain to live in the new lands. The Conquistador would be given a title (like Count, Duke, Earl, etc.) He would often be seen as a hero back home. This is the GLORY we refer to.

​Not only would the Conquistador become wealthy. Spain became the richest and most powerful country in the world because of the GOLD they found in New Spain.

​Spain was a Catholic nation. They had recently reconquered Spain from the Moors (Muslims who invaded Spain 700 years before). They wanted Spain to be all Catholic, and New Spain as well. GOD

​La Salle had been exploring for nearly 40 years. His last expedition took him (by accident) to Texas. He sailed from France looking for the Mississippi River. He sailed past it without knowing. He soon realized he missed it, so he and his crew landed in Texas.

​They built Fort St. Louis in Texas. LaSalle and some of his men left by land to go find the Mississippi. Sadly, La Salle was killed by his own men. When Spanish soldiers came to Fort St. Louis, they found everyone had been killed.
