What are animals ?

Animals are multicellular eukaryotic organisms that form the biological kingdom Animalia. With few exceptions, animals consume organic material, breathe oxygen, are able to move, can reproduce sexually, and grow from a hollow sphere of cells, the blastula, during embryonic development.

3

Types of animals

carnivorous

herbivorous

omnivorous

4

types of animals

  • carnivorous - animals which eat flesh of other animals or meat only.

  • herbivorous - animals which eat plants only.

  • omnivorous - animals which eat plants and meat like humans .

5

ADAPTATION IN ANIMALS

6

Open Ended

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OR MEANING OF ADAPTATION ?

7

adaptation . . . . . . . . . . .

the action or process of adapting or being adapted.“Adaptation is the physical or behavioural characteristic of an organism that helps an organism to survive better in the surrounding environment.” Living things are adapted to the habitat they live in. This is because they have special features that help them to survive.

8

5 types of animal adaptation

terrestrial animals , aquatic animals , amphibians , arboreal animals , and aerial animals .

9

DO YOU KNOW THE MEANING

  • TERRESTRIAL ANIMALS - animals who live on land . eg) triceratops

  • AQUATIC ANIMALS - animals who live on water . eg) fish

  • AMPHIBIANS - animals who live on land and water . eg) frog

  • ARBOREAL ANIMALS - animals who live on trees. eg ) monkey

  • AERIAL ANIMALS - animals who live on air or fly . eg) birds

life cycle of animals

frog , hen, butterfly

12

life cycle of frog

The life cycle of a frog consists of three stages: egg, larva, and adult. As the frog grows, it moves through these stages in a process known as metamorphosis. ... During metamorphosis, two hormones, prolactin and thyroxine, control the transformation from egg to larva to adult.

13

life cycle of hen

Hens are called pullets until they can lay their own eggs, and they lay eggs less than 24 hours after they breed with roosters. Hens sit on the eggs to help the embryo inside the egg develop, and after a hen hatches, it can live anywhere from 2 to 25 years or more, depending on where it lives.

14

life cycle of a butterfly

Female butterfly lays eggs on a leaf. These eggs hatch into a worm like a creature known as a caterpillar. ... When the caterpillar is fully grown, it transforms into a pupa. Within pupa, the old body parts of the caterpillar undergo a remarkable transformation called metamorphosis to become a beautiful, flying adult.

vertebrates and invertebrates

do u know ?

16

vertebrates

  • vertebrates are the animals with a backbone

  • mammals

17

invertebrates

  • invertebrates are the animals without a backbone

  • example - insects

18

warm blooded animals

  • Warm-blooded is an informal term referring to animal species which can maintain a body temperature higher than their environment.

19

cold blooded animals

Cold-blooded animals include reptilesfishesamphibians, insects, and other invertebrates. These animals are also called poikilothermic animals. Cold-blooded animals usually demonstrate any three of the thermoregulation mechanisms; Poikilothermy, Ectothermy, or Heterothermy.

metamorphosis and moulting

we will be learning the meaning

21

metamorphosis

  • metamorphois is the small changes occuring in the life cycle example from tadpole with tadpol to tadpol with two legs.

22

moulting

  • the removal of old skin is called moulting .

  • snakes do this . they remove their sin when it old and when they remove it the new skin will come

23

the chapter finished but we will have questions on what you learnt today .
