  • More than two centuries ago, when only about four million people lived in the United States, our country's founders created something called the Electoral College

  • It is a group of people called electors who cast their vote for president after the votes on Election Day come in.

Electors

  • They are chosen by their political parties in their political parties in their home states

  • Each states gets a certain number of electors, depending on how many member of Congress are from the state

  • California has 55 electors votes because of it's population ( many people living here)

  • Wyoming has the lowest population it only has three elector votes

All 50 states

Counting all fifty states, there are 538 electors


In order to win and be the Next President they need to obtain 270 electoral votes

Red, Blue, and Purple

States such as California, New York are called "Blue States"


This is because the majority of the people living these vote blue "Democrats " all the time

Tennessee and South Dakota tend to be Republicans "red states" all the time

Purple States

These states are called "purple states" because it's hard to predict which party will win there



Also know as Swing states "sometimes it turns blue other time it turns red"


States include: Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Colorado
