FANBOYS and Comma Practice
2
Remember!
FANBOYS are the conjunctions that combine sentences. They are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
3
How to use "and" and "but":
Use "and" to combine two ideas or sentences that continue a point.
Example:
I came to school and went to class.
Use "but" to combine two ideas or sentences that are contrasting. Example:
He ate everything but the broccoli.
4
How to use a comma:
Commas are used to separate clauses, phrases, or transition words. Examples:
Clauses: Near a small stream at the bottom of the canyon, park rangers discovered a gold mine.
Phrases: I love chocolate ice cream, but my brother prefers vanilla.
Transition words: One day, I called my mom with good news. However, she didn't hear the phone.
5
Commas can also be used to make a list!
Example: I went to the grocery store for eggs, milk, and bread.
