Text from the Video: Review it!
Make some notes in your Science NB for the following items:
What would be the claim for this video?
Can you support the claim with evidence?
List the evidence
Are there any Scientific Reasons you can find to explain the evidence and claim?
List the reasons.

Multiple Choice
This is a claim:
He speaks a weird language • He’s from Albuquerque • He drinks green liquids • He dresses funny • He drives a spaceship
True
False

Your turn...Take a moment and create a CER based on one of the following ideas.
Soccer is the most important sport in the world.
Face to Face learning in school is better than virtual learning.
Sour patch kids are the best candy.
Minecraft is the most popular game for kids under the age of 13.
10
LET’S SUPPORT OUR CLAIM WITH EVIDENCE
•Pick one of your claims (fill in the blank statements).
•Find 3 – 4 pieces of evidence of how these organisms
evolved differently based on the 5 evidences for common
ancestry.
1.Behavioral
2. Adaptation,
3.Vestigial/analogous structures
4. Comparative embryology
5. Molecular biology

EXAMPLE
•Evidence: The presence of the shared
Pax-1 gene, responsible for the
development of vertebrae, in both lizards
and snakes indicates a common
evolutionary origin between these
retiles.
•Reasoning: Since they both use the
same gene. Pax-1 gene, it suggests they
come from the same family tree. This
supports the idea that lizards and snakes
have a shared family history in evolution.
13
PROVIDE REASONING FOR EACH PIECE OF
EVIDENCE
• Claim- Snakes evolved from lizards.
• Evidence: Similar limb structures
between some snakes and lizards.
• Reasoning (explanation):
• Claim- Birds evolved from
crocodiles.
• Evidence: Similarities in the
structure of bird and crocodile
embryos.
• Reasoning (explanation):
14
EXAMPLES
• Claim- Snakes evolved from lizards.
• Evidence: Similar limb structures between some snakes and lizards.
• Reasoning (explanation): I found that some snakes have tiny leftover leg bones, kind of like what lizards
have. This makes me think that snakes might have evolved from lizards because they share similar
structures in their limbs, suggesting a common ancestor.
• Claim- Birds evolved from crocodiles.
• Evidence: Similarities in the structure of bird and crocodile
embryos.
• Reasoning (explanation): I discovered that bird embryos and crocodile embryos look pretty similar early on in development. They both have similar features, like the way their hearts form. This makes me
think that birds might have evolved from crocodiles because they share these early developmental
similarities, indicating a common ancestry.
