Two Kinds
This is June's story. She is recounting her childhood and her mother's desire for her to be a prodigy. Suyuan hopes that Jing-mei(June) will be the Chinese Shirley Temple and even tries unsuccessfully to have Jing-mei's hair permanently curled like Shirley Temple. She then goes on to find other things in which she hopes Jing-mei will excel. Jing-mei seems excited about becoming a prodigy.
