Exponents
Exponents are one of my favorite topics in math! They are interesting and FUN! I mean where else can you find a short way to write very long multiplication problems?
3
All exponents have two parts
Base,
Power
A base and power make up the exponent. An exponent cannot be an exponent without a base AND a power. See, look on the next slide!
4
62 is an exponent
Number 6 is the BASE (the number being multiplied).
Number 2 is the POWER (the amount of times to use 6 in multiplication)
This means we multiply 6 times 6!
So 62 means the same as 6 times 6!
5
Multiple Choice
True or False: Exponents have two parts, a base and a power.
True.
False.
6
The exponent of a number tells you how many times to use that number in multiplication.
In the exponent 82 the number 2 means to use 8 twice in multiplication. Like this: 8 x 8
So 82 is equal to the equation 8 times 8!
8 x 8 is the same as 82
7
