Exponents

Exponents are one of my favorite topics in math! They are interesting and FUN! I mean where else can you find a short way to write very long multiplication problems?

All exponents have two parts

• Base,

• Power

• A base and power make up the exponent. An exponent cannot be an exponent without a base AND a power. See, look on the next slide!

6² is an exponent

Number 6 is the BASE (the number being multiplied).

Number 2 is the POWER (the amount of times to use 6 in multiplication)

This means we multiply 6 times 6!

So 6² means the same as 6 times 6!
