Activity Series
Sometimes we combine a metal and an aqueous salt, and... nothing happens.
We can predict if a reaction will occur by using the Activity Series of elements!
The solid element WILL replace the aqueous element IF it is HIGHER on the Activity Series.
The solid element CANNOT replace the aqueous element if it is LOWER on the Activity Series.

Multiple Choice
What can you predict by using an activity series?
whether a single replacement reaction can occur
whether a chemical reaction will absorb energy
the state of a product
the melting points of elements
12
Multiple Choice
In the activity series, the more active elements are found
at the bottom
in the middle.
at the top.
Both (a) and (c)
13
Examples:
Using the Activity Series, determine if a reaction will occur for each pair of reactants. Then, predict the products.
1. CuSO4 + Na →
2. Ag + ZnCl2 →
14
Multiple Choice

16
Multiple Choice
Will silver react with magnesium chloride solution?
yes
no
17
Multiple Choice
Will this reaction happen if solid copper is dipped into a solution of zinc nitrate?
Yes
No
18
Multiple Choice
What will be the result of the following:
LiBr + Na ->
Li will replace Na
Na will replace Br
Na will replace Li
no reaction will occur

Multiple Choice
What will be the result of : Zn + AuCl2->
ZnCl2 +Au
ZnAu + Cl2
no reaction
ClAu + Zn
20
Multiple Choice
What would result for the following reaction:
magnesium + silver nitrate -->
no reaction
magnesium nitrate + silver
nitrate + silver magnesium
21
Multiple Choice
If metal A is placed in an ionic solution containing metal B ions and no
reaction occurs, then metal B is most likely
a halogen
higher on the activity series.
not on the activity series.
a catalyst.
22
Multiple Choice
According to the activity series,
which of the following single replaceement reactions can occur?
2Ni(s) + MgSO4(aq) →
2Al(s) + 3KOH(aq) →
3Ca(s) + Al2(SO3)3(aq) →
