Add, Subtract, Multiply Polynomials EDG 2.5-6

CLASSWORK GRADE

Slide image

2

The purpose of this lesson:

  • You will review/practice how to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. You did most of this in Algebra 1.

  • The grade you make will be a daily grade.

  • This assignment will replace Edgenuity 2.5-6

3

Before we Add, Subtract, and Multiply; Let's review the following

  • writing polynomials in standard form

  • naming polynomials by degree

  • naming polynomials by number of terms

  • identifying leading coefficient and constant terms

4

Answers should be written in standard form

Put exponents in descending order. The highest exponent will be first & the term without a variable is last.

Look at these examples ----->

5

Multiple Choice

Put this polynomial in standard form:

7x+2x23x47x+2x^2-3x^4

1

2x2+7x3x42x^2+7x-3x^4

2

3x4+2x2+7x-3x^4+2x^2+7x

3

3x4+7x+2x2-3x^4+7x+2x^2

6

Multiple Choice

What is the standard form of the polynomial,
 9x2 + 5x + 27 + 2x3

9x2 + 5x + 2x3 + 27
3
9x2 + 5x + 27 + 2x3
4
2x3 + 9x2 + 5x + 27

7

Degree of a Polynomial

the 'degree' is determined by the highest exponent. It does not matter how many terms the polynomial has.

STUDY THE CHART ON THE NEXT SLIDE.

YOU LEARNED THIS VOCAB. IN ALGEBRA 1

The lead coefficient is the number in front of the highest degree variable.

The constant is the number without a variable.

ADDING POLYNOMIALS

Just combine like-terms

Slide image

21

Like terms must have the exact same variables and exponents

Slide image

22

You can combine like-terms vertically as well ----->

Some people like to show their work in this way.

25

Adding polynomials to find perimeter

The perimeter of rectangle ABCD is (4x+8) + (4x+8) + (2x + 3) + (2x + 3) =

12x + 22

You need to label and add ALL sides

REMEMBER TO ADD UP ALL SIDES

27

SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS

Distribute and Re-write the second polynomial. After you distribute, you can lose parenthesis and combine like-terms.

DISTRIBUTING THE (-) IS LIKE MULTIPLYING BY -1

Distribute -1 and combine like terms vertically:

 2x26x+112x^2-6x+11
