Expanded form makes an addition problem out of the VALUES of each digit. 

Multiply the digit by its place value.
456 = (4 x 100) + (5 x 10) + (6 x 1)

When there are decimal places, think about the place value name and multiply the digit by that name: 0.76

  • 7 is in the tenths, so 7 times 1 tenth is (7 x 0.1)

  • 6 is in the hundredths, so 6 times 1 hundredth is (6 x 0.01) 

  • Add the values to show the expanded form. (7 x 0.1) + (6 x 0.01)
