2
What is a Polynomial?
A polynomial is an expression involving a sum of powers in one or more variables multiplied by coefficients, where the powers must be whole.
3
What it IS and what it is NOT:
4
Adding Polynomials
- Place like terms together
- Add the like terms
5
Example: Adding Polynomials

Multiple Choice
7
Multiple Choice
Add these polynomials:
(5x + 2) + (4x + 5)
9x -7
-9x-11
9x+7

-4x +6y + 6z
4x + y + 6z
-4x - y + 6z
-4x + y + 6z
9
Subtracting Polynomials
To subtract Polynomials, first reverse the sign of each term we are subtracting (in other words turn "+" into "-", and "-" into "+"), then add as usual.
OR
Use distributive property with negative one on the second polynomial, then combine like terms.

18
Factoring with GCF (Greatest Common Factor)
Factor out the greatest number and the smallest variable that each have in common.
19
Finding the GCF

The following slides contain videos that teach you how to simplify expressions that look like this ⬇
Topic #1: Dividing a Polynomial Expression by a Monomial Expression
Here is a graphic that refreshes you on the rules of exponents that we covered in class on Friday. Different letters are used, but the rules are the same.
There will also be practice questions for you to build your understanding with.
