What laws were Americans moving to Mexico’s territory of Texas
supposed to follow? Did they? Why or why not? How did Mexico respond?
-They were supposed to follow Mexican laws
-Settlers were required to learn Spanish
-Settlers were also forced to join the Roman
Catholic Church
-Mexico also tried to prohibit slavery.
-Many American planters refused to comply
-Many issued an official order, not allowing any
more american settlers to immigrate
-Also, sent in military to enforce laws

The Battle of Gonzales
-it was fought over the possession of one small
cannon
- In 1831 the Mexican government had loaned the
cannon to Texan colonists at Gonzales to defend
the colony against American Indians
-Although the skirmish had little military, it marked
a clear break between the colonists and the
Mexican government
The Battle of the Alamo
-The battle of the Alamo was fought over issues like
Federalism, preservation of the Antebellum South,
slavery, immigration rights, the cotton industry, and
above all, money
-At dawn on March 6, 1836, the 13th day of the siege,
the Battle of the Alamo started
- Fighting lasted about 90 minutes, and by daybreak
all the Defenders had been defeated, including a
former congressman from Tennessee, David Crockett
-Following the battle, Santa Anna ordered the
Defender's remains burned.

The Battle of Goliad
-The Battle of Goliad occurred because Texas
rebelled against Mexico in 1835 following
President Santa Anna's dissolution of the
constitution
-In the early-morning of October 9, 1835, Texas
settlers attacked the Mexican Army soldiers at
Presidio La Bahía, a fort near the Mexican Texas
settlement of Goliad
-It is said that the men executed were over three
hundred
-The tragedy at Goliad would be used to recruit
new soldiers into the Texas Army.
The Battle of San Jacinto
-People of the new Republic of Texas responded to
the destruction of the Alamo and massacre of the
unarmed “Texians” captured at Goliad with outrage
- Volunteer companies rushed to join General
Samuel Houston's growing Texas army
-Meanwhile, Mexican General Santa Anna marched
his army to destroy the Texan rebels
- While the battle only lasted 18 minutes, its
consequences were great
-The victory at San Jacinto gave Texas its
independence from Mexico and gave opportunities
to continue westward expansion of the United
States.
