​Conceptual Understanding: Thermal energy is transferred in the form of heat. Heat is always transferred from an area of high heat to low heat. More complex concepts and terminology related to phase changes are developed, including the distinction between heat and temperature.

​So what is Heat?

​Heat is energy that is transferred from one body to another as the result of a difference in temperature.

​

If two bodies at different temperatures are brought together, energy is transferred—i.e., heat flows—from the hotter body to the colder.

​Heat always moves from hot to cold!

​Three ways heat is transerred:

​What is Heat?

All matter is made up of molecules and atoms. These atoms are always in different types of motion (translation, rotational, vibrational). The motion of atoms and molecules creates heat or thermal energy. All matter has this thermal energy. The more motion the atoms or molecules have the more heat or thermal energy they will have.

​So, What is TEMPERATURE?

​Temperature - The average kinetic energy of all the molecules of the sample

​What are the temperature scales based on?

​Celcius & Fahrenheit are based on the freezing pt and boiling point of water.

​Kelvin is based on absolute zero. At absolute zero atoms have zero kinetic energy.

​Celcius & Fahrenheit - Temperature measurement
