Characterization

Writers use a variety of tools or techniques to make a character come alive on the page.

Two Types of Characterization

• Direct Characterization

• Indirect Characterization

Direct Characterization...

is exactly what it sounds like. The writer tells the reader what they need to know about the character. With this method, the reader doesn't really need to read between the lines.

Example:  “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.”

Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”
