​What is a diphthong?

​A diphthong can also be called a vowel team syllable. A diphthong is a syllable with two vowels working together to make one sound. But it isn't just a digraph! Vowel diphthongs are called sliding sounds, because the sound slides from one sound to the other. If you look in the mirror as you make a diphthong sound, you’ll notice the shape of your mouth changes. These are Diphthong Vowel Teams: oi, oy, ou, ow, au, aw, and oo.
