7.1 Division Patterns with Decimals

In today's lesson, we will look at what happens when you divide decimals by powers of 10.

In the past, you have learned how dividing numbers by 10, 100, or 1000 removes zeroes from the end of a number.

For example...

In the previous example, since 100 has two zeroes, you would remove two zeroes from the end of 64,000, leaving you with a quotient of 640.

However, what is really happening is that the decimal point is moving to the left two places. We will taken advantage of this as we begin dividing other numbers by powers of 10.

To determine how many places to move the decimal point to the left, count the number of zeroes in the power of ten.

We move the decimal to the left because we are dividing by a number larger than 1, which makes the quotient smaller.

Next, we will look at what happens when you divide by powers of 10 that are less than 1.

This includes divisors like 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, etc.

To determine how many places to move the decimal point to the right, count the number of decimal place values in the power of ten.

We move the decimal to the right because we are dividing by a number smaller than 1, which makes the quotient larger.
