DNA is Stuck!

DNA has the instructions to make all the proteins a living thing needs. Unfortunately, proteins can ONLY be made in ribosomes. DNA is stuck all the way in the nucleus!

3

How Does DNA get its instructions for making proteins?

By giving its message to RNA! RNA is different than DNA and can leave the nucleus.

Poll

What nitrogen base is unique to RNA?

Adenine (A)

Cytosine (C)

Guanine (G)

Thymine (T)

Uracil (U)

6

So how do we make this RNA stuff?

  • The process is called TRANSCRIPTION

  • A DNA template is used to make a COMPLIMENTARY strand of RNA (think the matching bases)

Slide image

7

Transcription Process

  • DNA unwinds

  • A protein gets a signal to find the right starting point (RNA polymerase).

  • RNA monomers come in and match to the complimentary DNA base.

8

Transcription Process

  • RNA pieces (monomers) get glued together

  • The DNA code tells the process to stop

  • DNA zips back together

Fill in the Blank

A gene on a strand of DNA has the nitrogen base code ACG TCG TAA. This gene undergoes transcription. What would the nitrogen bases look like on the COMPLIMENTARY strand of RNA
