Components of a Narrative

In your notebook, you will write down these components and their meanings.

  1. Theme- central message or insight into life revealed by the writer

  2. Plot- sequence of events in a literary work. (Plot diagram)

    Exposition- introduces the settings

    Inciting incident- the central conflict

    Climax- conflict increases and reaches the highest point

    Falling action- events that happen after the climax

    Denouncement- also known as the resolution- at the end of the story and the solution to the conflict is revealed and solved

  3. Character- a person or animal that takes part in the action of the story



Characters are either protagonists or antagonist

Components of a Narrative continued

In your notebook, you will write down these components and their meanings.
4. Conflict- struggle between the character or characters
5. Setting- a time and a place
6. Point of View- an author's perspective from which events are told or described
7. Style- a unique way of how the author writes. Authors use diction, tone, figurative language, dialect, dialogue, mood, and rhythm

When it comes to writing a story, authors have to think about how and who they are trying to attract.
