If you mentioned energy, mass, gravity, and height in your answer than you are somewhat correct!

5

Physical Science Chapter 6 - Energy

Example: Urban Heat Island Effect...
Why do you think cities are hotter than rural areas?

6

Physical Science Chapter 6 - Energy

Why is energy important?
- Energy moves and drives everything!
- For example, the water cycle is a never-ending system that runs by the use of energy.
- As humans, we consume and release energy (sandwich) (we release heat as by product)
- There are two forms of energy: Potential and Kinetic Energy

Do you think a sandwich has any energy? Explain your reasoning in two sentences.

8

Physical Science Chapter 6 - Energy

What is energy?
- Energy is not easily definable...
- Meaning we do not know what energy is, but we do know what it does and has the potential to do.
- Energy is a positive scalar Quantity measured in Joules.
- Energy can be defined as the ability to do work
- Work = force x distance travelled...

How are work and energy interchangeable in science. Define both terms in your own words. This should be two separate sentences...

11

Physical Science Chapter 6 - Energy

What are the two Forms of Energy?
- There are many different types of energy including: light, radiation, heat, elastic, potential, magnetic, nuclear, mechanical and many more! We will focus alot on mechanical energy = energy that is possessed by an object due to its motion or due to its position
- The TWO main FORMS of ENERGY are Potential and Kinetic Energy.

media

12

Physical Science Chapter 6 - Energy

What is Potential Energy?
- Potential energy is energy that is dependent on position, and a force that has the potential to move an object from its current position.
- The easiest way to remember potential energy: roller coasters, pumpkin launching, food, and light bulbs!

media

13

Physical Science Chapter 6 - Energy

What is Kinetic Energy?
- Kinetic energy is the release of the potential energy within a system
- All moving matter consists of kinetic energy (movement of energy).
- Systems usually have some type of potential and/or kinetic energy.

1

True

2

False

22

Multiple Choice

Total energy will always change in a system of objects.

1

True; energy is destroyed due to friction

2

False; energy cannot be destroyed, only transferred.

23

Multiple Choice

What is kinetic energy?
1
Energy that results from the position or shape of an object
2
Potential energy related to an object's height
3
The energy an object has due to its motion

24

Multiple Choice

When energy is transferred, the object upon which the work is done ______ energy.
1
Gains
2
Loses

25

Multiple Choice

Mechanical energy can be defined as:
1
the energy associated with the motion and position of an object.
2
is energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds
3
a form of energy that is reflected or emitted from objects in the form of electrical and magnetic waves that can travel through space.

26

Multiple Choice

What is potential energy?
1
The rate at which work is done
2
The amount of energy transferred in a unit of time
3
Energy that results from the position or shape of an object

27

Multiple Choice

What is gravitational potential energy
1
Potential energy related to an object's height
2
Energy that results from the position or shape of an object
3
The energy associated with objects that can be compressed or stretched.

28

2
Potential energy related to an object's height
3
The energy associated with objects that can be compressed or stretched.

1
Potential Energy
2
Kinetic Energy
3
Both answers are correct

30

Multiple Choice

Question image
If I throw a baseball across the room, did I do work on the baseball?
1
Yes - Work = Force x Distance, thus you performed work on the baseball, and transferred your mechanical energy to the baseball
2
No, even though work = force x distance, there was no energy transfer through the ball. This is because the ball cannot receive energy like other working systems.
