The End of the War

  • The British defeated the French at the battle of Louisbourg and at the French occupied Fort Duquesne in 1758

  • Knowing they were defeated, the French set their own fort on fire and ran away

  • This marked an important turning point in the Seven Years' War

6

What Were the Final Stages of the War

  • The British defeated the French in Quebec on September 13,1759

  • Shortly after this battle, the French surrendered to the British in 1760

  • This marked the end of the Seven Years' War, but not the problems between all of the sides involved

7

What Happened After the War?

  • The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 (Three years after the war ended)

  • This officially marked the end of the Seven Years' War

8

The Treaty of Paris

  • The treaty gave Britain all of the land east of the Mississippi River, except for New Orleans

  • The area west of New Orleans was given to Spain, who was a French ally

  • France kept New Orleans

  • At this time, Great Britain traded Cuba to Spain in exchange for Florida, which is how Florida became a colony (and later a state)

9

What Happened After the War?

  • Great Britain was again the strongest nation in the world

  • It had spent a lot of money fighting with France though, and they looked to the Colonies to pay for it, in the form of taxes

  • Now that the French were no longer a threat to the colonies though, they didn't feel like they needed British protection any longer

  • Many colonists hated that Britain was raising taxes on them for a war that they didn't even want to fight in
