2

Matter

So far, we have started to split matter up into different categories. This was either based on their properties (chemical or physical) or the changes that they can undergo (chemical or physical).

Chemical Properties - these properties indicate how a substance will react with something else. This matter is changed into a new substance after a chemical reaction.

Physical Properties - properties that can be observed with the senses without destroying matter.

Give 3 examples of a PHYSICAL property.

5

For today's lesson, we are talking about 2 categories of PHYSICAL properties.

Let's think about what those were...

Question image

List as many physical properties as you can!

7

Here they are!

temperature

density

boiling/melting point

color

luster

hardness

ductility

conductivity

malleability

heat

mass

volume

size

weight

length

8

New Terms You Probably haven't seen:

hardness - the ability of material to resist deformation

ductility - the ability of a material to have its shape changed

luster - to be shiny or reflective

malleability - can be hammered into thin sheets

conductivity - ability to conduct heat or electricity

9

Extensive Properties

These are physical properties that are DEPENDENT on the amount of substance that is present.

So, the more of that substance that I have, the higher that physical property's value!

media

10

Intensive Properties

These are properties that are INDEPENDENT of the amount of substance that is present.

So, it doesn't matter how much of that substance I have. The value for its physical properties will ALWAYS be the same.

Question image

Is there a difference between temperature and heat?

YES!

NO!

Aren't they the same thing???

16

Temperature

Temperature describes the average kinetic energy of molecules within a system. (measures in degrees F ,or C, or K (kelvin))

For example ice...

Water freezes at 0 degrees C, no matter how much there is...

So, temperature is an intensive property!

17

Heat

Heat describes the transfer of energy between molecules within a system and is measured in Joules (J).

In this case we can talk about boiling water...

It would on take 5-10 minutes to boil a small pot of water but, it would take way longer to boil GALLONS of water.

The amount of heat energy needed to boil the water is DEPENDENT on the amount of water present. So, heat is an extensive property!

18

Density

Density is a term that people often use to describe whether something will sink or float.

The formula for density is:

We can look at water for example. Its density is 1.0 g/mL. It doesn't matter if I have 10 gallons or 2 mL of water. Its density will always be 1.0 g/mL.

Do you think this is an extensive or intensive property??
